Green Day – This is why you’re better than America

November 2, 2009

greendaylogo

I saw the ‘Bullet in a bible’ gig on DVD and said to myself I really need to see these guys live. So I got some tickets and waited for October 31. During this time I think I sort of lost a little interest, or rather wasn’t looking forward to it as much as when I planned to go.

But I went….

…and fuck me I’m glad I did!

A band so cool they themselves are the support act. Foxboro Hotubs were amazing, the unknowing were all outside drinking beer and eating bad food whilst we caught a glimpse of Green Day’s other pet project. The Reverend Strychnine Twitch was a punk evangelist hellbent on spreading the word through controlled epileptic fits and liquor infused verbal assaults. (Fuck me I like that line!)

Once they had finished priming the crowd they left and the usual stage crew started climbing those dodgy looking rope ladders, best seat in the house maybe? The backing tracks came on and the usual crowd build up occurred every time a track finished only to be disappointed by yet another song.

Then it went dark…

Over the speakers :

Sing us a song of the century
That’s louder than bombs and Eternity
The era of static and contraband
Leading us into the promised land
Tell us a story that’s by candlelight
Waging a war and losing the fight
They’re playing our song of the century
Panic and promise and prosperity
Tell me a story into that goodnight
Sing us a song for me

and boom, 3 hours of pure energy, crowd participation, audience members stage diving, audience members playing drums and guitars, water guns, explosions, fireworks and total mayhem.

As soon as the first few chords of 21st Century played, we knew we were in for an amazing night. I have never seen a band with such energy, constantly keeping the crowd bouncing. Even when messing about between songs….still going.

So where do I start? I filmed a load of clips, but some of them were ruined by the dipshits walking back and forth. So here’s a couple for you :

Know your enemy, during this clip the spotlight heads over to the crowd as Billie (first name basis) went into the crowd and gave some kid his guitar to play. Then headed back, got another young fan out and got her to stage dive. Must have been an amazing night for those kids.

This little ditty, that inspired the title of this article :

this one :

On the third encore Billie put this bad boy to bed :

The videos really don’t do this gig justice, it was a non stop barrage of great tracks, pyrotechnics and in your face entertainment. At one point 3 people were chosen from the audience as they had some sort of musical experience, young girl on drums, another on guitar and a young lad on bass. Next thing you know Billie is singing away as they play the track. Those kids are probably still talking about that now.

Tre, Billie, Mike, and the two Jasons rocked the fuck out of the M.EN, Loads of new material, plus some old school GD, and then some ooold school greenday. Heres the setlist :

Green Day Setlist Manchester Evening News Arena, Manchester, England 2009

Today Green Day have announced a summer tour – 19 June 2010 Wembley Stadium. I’m there like a bear.

The band ended the night on a couple slow ones, ‘Good Riddance’ being the finale. I was going to insert a really clever play on the ‘hope you had the time of your life’ ending, but can’t be arsed.

Green Day are one of the most amazing live acts you can see.No doubt. Get some.

sup! Friday Playlist 30 October

October 30, 2009

Howdy!

Right so here is this weeks playlist, quite proud of this one. Its a bit more dancey / rockyier than last week… I think.

Off to see Greenday tomorrow at the MEC – been hearing good things! So expect some videos of a distant stage with Blurry figures freaking out.

So, the tunes :

Biffy Clyro – The Captain – Single Version
Wolfmother – California Queen
Peaches – I Feel Cream
Norman Bleik -I Was A King
The Music – Strength In Numbers
The Cribs – We Share The Same Skies
Kitchens Of Distinction – The 3rd Time We Opened the Capsule
The Holloways – Generator
Echo And The Bunnymen – Think I Need It Too
Muse – Undisclosed Desires
Muse – Cave
Green Day – Macy’s Day Parade
Killing Joke – Requiem
Prodigy – Spitfire
Prodigy – Memphis Bells
Johnny Foreigner – Salt, Pepper and Spindarella

Two older Prodigy tracks here, two reasons… first is for the rerelease of Invaders must die (Special Edition) and secondly because I’ve just secured tickets for Their Milton Keynes gig!!! Going to be amazing! The Warriors dance festival – supported by Pendulum, Enter shikari, Does it offend you yeah? and Chase&Status. Really excited, even though its only in July. I’ve also added the brand new Echo and the Bunnymen, very cool song. Of course there is some Muse, the new ‘Undisclosed Desires’ – Slappin da bease! and the classic amazing Cave. Lastly I’ve finally added the new Biffy Clyro single – The Captain.

So once again, a little bit of old and new tracks. Hope you enjoy.

I’m hoping to have the blog moved over to new servers soon, then my vision can come a reality – or I can simple add better themes… ;-) Been working on my personal website the past few weeks so I haven’t been concentrating on writing anything for this blog. Hope to soon though so it stops looking like a video and playlist only site.

Have a great weekend, I’m off to chill with Billy, Mike and Tré. (Now adding this playlist to the spotify wavelet on google wave. – yes I am that advanced)

Friday Playlist – just to get back on track

October 23, 2009

Ay Yo.

So to bring things back from the previous post its time to link you to whats playing on my iTunes this week. Pretty short list, some old, some new. I especially like the General Fiasco track even though the average age in the band is about ten….well they look it. Saw them support Placebo at the iTunes festival. Very cool.

Right, enough shit, heres todays list :

Pixies – Wave Of Mutilation
Belle and Sebastian – Lazy Line Painter Jane
Mercury Rev – Opus 40
Mr Beasley – Right As Rain
Frank Turner – I Knew Prufrock Before He Got Famous
Frank Turner – Photosynthesis
The Boxer Rebellion – Semi Automatic
Starsailor – Tell Me It’s Not Over (Acoustic)
Caesars – Jerk It Out (Original Mix)
Snow Patrol – Little Hide
General Fiasco – We Are The Foolish
Death Cab for Cutie – Marching Bands of Manhattan
The Vines – Get Free
Brakes – Why Tell The Truth – When It’s Easier To Lie

a lot of chilled stuff on here today to be fair. Really getting into Frank Turner lately, seems like a happier Damien Rice… oh and some really old school Snow Patrol.

Anyway, have a bloody good weekend!!!!

Classic : Spandau Ballet – live at the O2 21Oct

October 23, 2009

I think if you read this blog from the beginning and took note of the gigs I’ve attended you may figure out my taste in music. However this posting will probably fuck that up.

I love the 80’s, well the British eighties anyway. It gave us some great music, Gary Numan, Depeche Mode, Duran Duran, amongst others and of course these guys :

the lads are not happy with your outfit

the lads are not happy with your outfit

Spandau feckin Ballet man! Whos look has somewhat changed :

the lads are now satisfied with your outfit

the lads are now satisfied with your outfit

I wasn’t expecting much to be honest, but after some Goucho’s steaks we headed into the arena and they were fantastic! (the band I mean) Every classic you can imagine was belted out by Tony’s powerful voice. A couple new ones were thrown in too. I got the feeling they were loving it, like they had never left. To think a while ago they were at each others throats with court cases and what not and here they were back on the road. I was sort of expecting to be sorrounded by housewives freaking out but there were bunches of lads singing their hearts out to ‘True” and “Chant No. 1″.Although there was a strange nun like woman to my right that sat quietly on her own then suddenly got up and went for it. Makes me think how many old groupies were in the audience…

Slightly disappointed by the mosh pit though… and absolutely no crowd surfing…strange that.

So here’s my clips :

Only when you leave :

Can’t not have this bad boy :

and of course the finale :

Loved it, just got to get involved on a Duran Duran gig now and its all good.

Friday Playlist is on its way, get back to normal!

The Cult – Love Live

October 18, 2009

cultLoveLive

I got into the Cult via the Electric Album, loved it. Then got into Sonic Temple, loved that too. My sister even named her kid after Edie (ciao baby) – not realising is was based on a junkie nutter. Growing up in South africa alot of our music was imported over. Although ‘Love’ was sent to me from a family member for my birthday.  This was clearly the turning point for the Cult, the album that gave them their biggest break, the album that lead me to hear “Rain”.

Present day, Ian and Billy put this album back on tour. I was there, at the Royal Albert Hall. Great venue, great gig!

I didn’t film much, two full songs. The first one was this bad boy, Rain :

Lastly, Billy announced the original lineup from the Love album were coming on stage and they played a few unrehearsed tracks, namely this well known one :

Before the encore they covered the entire anthem, when they came back we had the likes of Wild Flower and Fire Woman. – yes I rocked the fuck out like I was having an epileptic fit.

Now just waiting for them to announce the Electric tour and I’m good! So theres a few vids for you to see, not the best quality but check em out anyway.

Delayed Friday Playlist – its here alright!

October 17, 2009

Friday was a bit nuts, I’d been prepping this list all week and planned to put it out in the morning. A few client tasks later I was sitting in Goucho’s destroying mojitos. (Just seemed that much more fun then typing up a playlist release)

HHHHanyway….

Viola :

Tiësto feat. Kele Okereke – It’s Not The Things You Say
Timo Maas – First Day (feat. Brian Molko)
Mumford & Sons – Little Lion Man
Echo And The Bunnymen – The Cutter – Alternate Version
Editors – An End Has a Start (Boom Bip remix)
Editors – Papillon
The xx – Crystalised
Band Of Skulls – Death By Diamonds And Pearls
Invisible – Monster’s Waltzwolfmother,
Tilly And The Wall – Falling Without Knowing
Goldfrapp – Strict Machine
…And You Will Know Us By The Trail Of Dead – Mistakes & Regrets
Wolfmother – New Moon Rising – YACHT Remix
Gliss – Beauty
New Young Pony Club – Ice Cream
The Fall – Touch Sensitive
Wiley – Cash In My Pocket ft Daniel Merriweather
Alex Metric – Deadly On A Mission – Alex Metric Remix

Again, NME radio played a big role here. Such a cool station, feck knows why I didn’t have them on the office radio sooner. Theres a couple tracks I’m really into missing from here, namely Julian Casablancas – 11th dimension. Great chooon.

Two tracks from The Editors this time, first the new one, makes me think of early Depeche Mode meets that Joy Division voice…. and then a cool mix of An end has a start. Oh and thanks to Jools last week, some classic Echo and the Bunnymen. Tilly and the Wall too, my sister got me into them sometime ago, the track on here is doing the rounds right now. Goldfrapp’s strict machine….a blatant influence for the new MUSE. (Even though they are gods)  Lastly, I thought Band of skulls was a new one from the white stripes… but nooo… very cool track.

Shit I still need to upload the cult videos I took… maybe tomorrow!

Enjoy the rest of the weekend, about to go catch up on some shows I missed this week. Probably watch xfactor only to hopefully see a manic audience member jump on stage and set fire to them. Think that bloke that decked Leona Lewis got his contestants mixed up.
